Fairy Tales and Broken Cigarettes
The sun went down and my glass was sticking to the bar
The lights turned on and I hadn’t moved very far
The night closed in and you sat down by me
The sun came up and you were no where to be seen
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
Empty bottles and things I don’t regret
Don’t stop now ’cause I ain’t done with you yet
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
I’ll walk alone through the dusty streets on a hill
The sidewalks are cracked but I remember where still
Moving past the street lights kickin’ on run down cars
I’ll walk til broken windows fall down like stars
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
Empty bottles and things I don’t regret
Don’t stop now ’cause I ain’t done with you yet
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
I’ll sit down with a drink to try to numb my pain
I’ll wash down this scarred and silly, old drain
The clock will spin until the hands do settle down
The night will fly and I will never be found
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
Empty bottles and things I don’t regret
Don’t stop now ’cause I ain’t done with you yet
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
Empty bottles and things I don’t regret
Don’t stop now ’cause I ain’t done with you yet
Fairy tales and broken cigarettes
The Hand of God
The hand of God has touched me
My troubles have all gone away
The sky is bright and I’m feeling all right
I wake up and go to face the day
The adversary is passing
Faded to black in my plight
The stars they shine, I try and try
My spirit is sold to the night
The faith I have in my savior
I grip it tight in my rapier
Sow the seeds before the storm comes in
And lay down and take a sip of that sloe gin
I pray for my soul’s salvation
I get on my knees and I find
The ghost is gone, the father has died
The son that I once thought was mine
The hand of God has touched me
My troubles have all gone away
The sky is bright and I’m feeling all right
I wake up and go to face the day
The faith I have in my savior
I grip it tight in my rapier
Sow the seeds before the storm comes in
And lay down and take a sip of that sloe gin
And lay down and take a sip of that sloe gin
When I Drink
When I drink I dump my shot into the beer
When I drink I lose all my sense of fear
When I drink I meet a girl and she destroys my world
Then I leave her with an insult and a twirl
When I drink I have no sense of time
When I drink I do it just to unwind
When I drink I do revere, til I see crystal clear
Then I wonder what happened to my beer
I have a drink, while I’m drinking
At the same time I drink when I’m singing
When I drink I put the bottle down and look what I have found
Another drink to fill me til I drown
When I drink I make fun of all my friends
When I drink I drink alone out in my shed
When I drink I see some people out by the church steeple
Then I get down and I pray until I’m feeble
I have a drink, while I’m drinking
At the same time I drink when I’m singing
When I drink I put the bottle down and look what I have found
Another drink to fill me til I drown
When I drink I get two bottles at a time
When I drink I drink whatever I can find
When I drink I search the trash in hopes of sour mash
Then I get let down when all I find is cash
I have a drink, while I’m drinking
At the same time I drink when I’m singing
When I drink I put the bottle down and look what I have found
Another drink to fill me til I drown
Another drink to fill me til I drown
Ponderosa Pine
He came out of the thyme, with his cigarettes and wine
And his coat between his knees, dragging ponderosa pine
Pine
And he stuck it in the ground, the pine tree he had found
Ghosts rising in the smoke, they gathered all around
Gathered around
And he built himself a cross, for a friend that he had lost
It stood real right and tall, a reminder of the cost
Cost
He came out of the thyme, with his cigarettes and wine
And his coat between his knees, dragging ponderosa pine

Small Town
I’m from a small town, yes indeed
It’s kinda messed up, a lot like me
From a small town
I live in a little house on the street
Know all the people by the patter of their feet
Patter of their feet
Such an itty bitty city
Such an itty bitty city
Looks like heaven, but down deep it’s real gritty
Such and itty bitty city
Such and itty bitty city
Looks like hell, but down deep it’s real pretty
I gots me a neighbor, yes indeed
He mows the lawn and I go scream
I gots me a neighbor
I gots me a gas station on the corner
Guy behind the desk is our only foreigner
I gots me a foreigner
Such an itty bitty city
Such an itty bitty city
Looks like heaven, but down deep it’s real gritty
Such and itty bitty city
Such and itty bitty city
Looks like hell, but down deep it’s real pretty
I gots me a neighborhood patrol
They catch me drinking and away I roll
Away I roll
I sit behind the bar in our only cell
Neighbor locks the door for the time I yelled
The time I yelled
Such an itty bitty city
Such an itty bitty city
Looks like heaven, but down deep it’s real gritty
Such and itty bitty city
Such and itty bitty city
Looks like hell, but down deep it’s real pretty
Looks like hell, but down deep it’s real pretty
Farmer John
Old farmer John
All alone in his barn
Just killed his wife
Mom to his son
Old man he won
A stake to the heart
A knife to the neck
Trigger to the gun
There’s a light that shines in the back of his mind
There’s a darkness inside, it’s never too kind
Take off the lid, the thoughts are all hid
He just gets out his shovel... And digs
Old farmer John
Not alone in the barn
His boy’s in the hay
Killing’s not done
Young man he won
Rope to the neck
Axe to the head
Spilling John’s guts
There’s a light that shines in the back of his mind
There’s a darkness inside, it’s never too kind
Take off the lid, the thoughts are all hid
He just gets out his shovel... And digs
Young man alone
His pops all gone
Momma’s been mangled
Cold to the bone
A family of one
Soon to be none
Bullet in the gun
Prodigal son
There’s a light that shines in the back of his mind
There’s a darkness inside, it’s never too kind
Take off the lid, the thoughts are all hid
He just gets out his shovel... And digs
My Honey
My honey, my sweet
My sugar darlin’ baby
My heartbeat, my dear
My sunlit, blooming daisy
Every time that you kiss me, you drive me crazy
When I lose my mind, I give up the fight
I give up reason, I surrender my try
My honey, my sweet
My sugar darlin’ baby
My flower, my spice
My favorite, lifetime find
My lover, my flame
My star in the night sky
Every time that you touch me, I lose my mind
When I lose my mind, I give up the fight
I give up reason, I surrender my try
My honey, my sweet
My sugar darlin’ baby
My lovely, my life
My darling, always giving
My dearest, my pulse
My reason for living
Every time that you smile, I feel forgiven
Every time that you smile, I feel forgiven
I’ve Never Been Right
I’m going back where I started
Back where it all began
I’m going back where I started, again
I’m riding that road so slowly
I can read all the signs
I’m riding that road so slowly, in my mind
I’m turning around, I’m turning around, for me
I’m turning around, I’m turning around, for me
It’s always been about me
It’s never been for you
It’s always been about me, to you
I’m selfish, I’m wrong and I’m never right
When it comes to us
I’m selfish, I’m wrong, I don’t know true love
I’ve never been right, I’ve never been right, for you
I’ve never been right, I’ve never been right, for you
I’ve never been right, I’ve never been right, for you
